Get to know Camp Casco's Board Members!

Our Board of Directors is a wonderful group of individuals who work tirelessly throughout the year to guide our organization. Each brings a unique perspective to our team that has helped us grow and improve in countless ways. Read on to meet each volunteer Board Member and learn about their incredible contributions to our team!

Dr. Michael Goldberg, also known as "Sunshine Lollipops", is a Board Member and our Co-Founder! On top of running his own research lab at Harvard University, which focuses on developing novel therapies in order to improve outcomes for cancer patients, he has been part of Camp Casco since day 1. Dr. Goldberg quite honestly helps with anything and everything at Camp Casco, from serving as a camp counselor in our first year, to hosting our 2016 gala and organizing our 2016 volunteer appreciation brunch. Dr. Goldberg is not only incredibly helpful and resourceful, but also brings endless encouragement and positivity to all around him, truly embodying the spirit of Camp Casco.

Whitney "Karat" Silkworth with campers at Camp Casco 2016

Whitney "Karat" Silkworth is a Ph.D. Candidate at Harvard University, the Director of our Grant Committee, and serves as our Clerk and Chief Development Officer! She pretty much does it all - except sleep. Whitney joined Camp Casco very early on in 2014, when our co-founders were seeking support from the Harvard Biological and Biomedical Sciences community. Whitney has been an absolute driving force behind the growth of Camp Casco, and has helped with everything from preparing our formation paperwork to raising thousands of dollars through her successful grant-writing. In fact, it's hard to find an area of our organization she hasn't played an essential role in! Whitney is largely behind all of our team's success to date, and her contributions really cannot be overstated. We are incredibly lucky to have Whitney on our team!

Ryan Starr and his son, Will, at a 2016 Board meeting

Ryan Starr, J.D., is an Associate at DLA Piper LLP, and our Board Secretary. Ryan first got involved with Camp Casco when he volunteered to help us become a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization back in 2014. His incredible knowledge on the subject was so helpful that we achieved tax-exemption status in record time, but it was really his great attitude and passion for our cause that made the tedious process actually enjoyable. We loved working with Ryan so much that we quickly offered him a role on our Board. We've been so lucky to have Ryan's provide valuable insights into nonprofit governance (and many other areas!) ever since, and he has been a wonderful addition to our team.

Joseph Kahn, M.B.A., is the Founder and Owner of LINX Premier Classes and Camps, and a Board Member at Camp Casco. Joe joined our Board in 2015, when we were introduced through future Board Member and mutual friend Cliff Webster. Joe brings years of expertise in running high-quality camps and classes for kids of all ages to our team, and has provided valuable insights and countless resources to make our camp the best it can be. Joe has greatly improved our volunteer management, our camp application system, and much of the planning that goes into our camp week, to name just a few examples. Joe's guidance of the operations of Camp Casco has absolutely transformed our organization, and we are so grateful.

Clifford Webster canoeing with us at Camp Casco 2016!

Clifford Webster, M.B.A., is a Wealth Management Advisor at Northwestern Mutual Life and our Board Treasurer. Cliff was a friend of Whitney Silkworth's who initially connected us to Joe Kahn, and became interested in getting involved himself in late 2015. Cliff blew us away with his insights into relationship building and fundraising ideas, and we knew he belonged on our Board. Since joining us, Cliff has helped us in so many ways, especially in networking and fundraising, and currently works with our Finance Committee to oversee our operating budget and work towards an eventual endowment. Cliff is both incredibly knowledgeable and extremely personable, and it is truly a joy to have him on our team.

Dr. Edward Benz

Finally, while not a Board Member, we are excited to share the newest addition to Camp Casco's Family and our first Special Advisor to the Board, Dr. Edward Benz! Dr. Benz graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1973 and received his training at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the National Institutes of Health. He has served as president and CEO emeritus of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, director emeritus and principal investigator of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, and a member of the Governing Board of Dana-Farber/Children's Cancer Center. He is also a clinical hematologist and an active NIH-funded investigator. Dr. Benz joined Camp Casco in early 2017, and we are incredibly honored to have his expertise and insights to help guide our organization.

Happy Voluntine's Month to the world's best Board! We are so lucky to have you on our team!
