As a younger organization, you can imagine how much it meant to us to learn that multiple campers refer to Camp Casco as "home." Imagine the safety, the comfort, the nurturing environment that a child must feel in order to associate any given place with the ideals of "home." This is what Camp Casco has created in just two years of camp, and it's thanks to the incredible efforts of our second Voluntine of the month, our amazingly talented Camp Planning team.
While our camp is just one week a year, no one knows better than this group that planning a life-changing week of sleep-away camp is truly a year-round effort. Read on to meet each of our outstanding team members and learn about the wonderful contributions they make to our team!
Krystin "Lo" Whitacre has served as our Camp Director since we started three years ago, and leads the Camp Planning team throughout the year. 2017 will mark her 10th year of experience in pediatric oncology camps, giving her an outstanding wealth of knowledge around specialty camps like ours, and the thought and planning that go into every detail. Krystin oversees all aspects of camp, and expertly guides and supports the Camp Planning team to ensure that each child receives the amazing week of camp he or she deserves. Get to know Krystin even better by attending our virtual information sessions, The Lo-Down on Camp Casco, on Facebook Live!
Dr. Jeffrey "Bird" Vogel is returning as our Medical Director for his third summer at Camp Casco! Dr. Vogel brings his expertise in Occupational and Environmental Medicine to our camp Med Shed, where he oversees a team of volunteer medical professionals round-the-clock throughout the week of camp. Dr. Vogel reviews and approves all camper medical histories, keeps a close watch on all campers throughout the week, and communicates with families and providers as needed to ensure each child receives the absolute best quality of care while at Camp Casco.
Victoria "Scout" Valencia, our Head Counselor, brings her own wealth of knowledge to the Camp Planning team, with 12 years experience in pediatric oncology camps! During the week of camp, Victoria oversees and supports all cabin counselors to ensure that each cabin group is having their best week ever. Throughout the years, Victoria has assisted with a number of camp planning efforts (like coming up with our epic annual tradition Lights Out Lunch!), and in 2017, she will coordinate all camp volunteer interviews, selection, and training to ensure that each camp volunteer is well-prepared to create another amazing week of camp.
Richelle "Railroad" Ramirez, our Activities Director, has a whopping 14 years of experience in pediatric oncology camps! Throughout the year, Richelle works extensively with the Berkshire Outdoor Center to plan and execute all of the unique Camp Casco programming our campers love, from egg roulette to Pokemon Go, and to create our full weekly schedule. This year, Richelle has dreamed up our 2017 camp theme, Planet Earth, and is developing some incredible theme days and activities that are sure to make 2017 our best year yet.
Yamini "Scoops" Krishnan has served on both our Family Outreach and Camp Planning teams since she joined us over two years ago, and currently serves as our Camper Enrollment Coordinator, creating and updating our camper applications from year to year, organizing all camper enrollment forms, and maintaining camper records. Yamini also serves as a camp activities counselor, helping Richelle execute the amazing ideas that make Camp Casco extra-special.
Natalie "Gingersnap" Kingston joined the team just before our 2016 camp session and has become a huge asset to the team by becoming our Supply Coordinator! You can imagine the massive number of supplies required for a week-long summer camp, and Natalie organizes, tracks, and analyzes our supplies from year to year to help us avoid waste and make the best use of our donated equipment. You can help Natalie track new incoming supplies by purchasing one from our brand-new 2017 Amazon Wish List - check it out here!
Thank you, Camp Planning team, for all you do to make Camp Casco our home. Happy Voluntine's Month!
