Water Safety (And Fun!) At Camp Casco

At Camp Casco, swim time is something our campers look forward to all year, whether it’s pool time at Day Camp or lakefront swims at our Sibling and Oncology Camps. It’s about more than just cooling off on a hot day; it’s about having fun, building confidence, enjoying the freedom of summer, and being safe.

Here’s how we make sure every camper is safe in and around the water:

✅ Trained Lifeguards at Every Water Activity

Certified lifeguards supervise all Camp Casco’s swim sessions, whether we’re at the pool or the lake. Our lifeguards are trained to respond quickly and keep a close eye on every swimmer. Our counselors are also right there alongside them for extra supervision and encouragement.

🛟 Life Jackets at the Lake

At our overnight camps (Sibling and Oncology), every camper wears a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket during lake activities, and it helps everyone, from strong swimmers to first-timers, feel more confident. While not required in the pool, life jackets are also available for swimmers during pool time.

🏊 Swim Checks and Grouping by Skill

We do quick swim assessments at the start of camp and group campers based on their comfort and ability in the water. This helps us tailor swim time so that every camper feels supported and safe, whether they’re dog-paddling near the edge or diving right in.

📋 Clear Rules & Structured Swim Time

Every swim session is structured and guided by clear, consistent rules to ensure everyone in the water stays safe. Campers know what’s expected, and our staff reinforces water safety throughout the day.

How You Can Help Your Camper Get Ready

Here are a few simple things you can do to help your camper get ready for their time in the water:

  • Talk about water rules: Remind your child to listen to lifeguards and stay with their group.

  • Let them know it’s okay to ask for help: Whether they’re nervous about the water or just need a break, the counselors and lifeguards are there to help.

  • Practice water confidence: If you can, spend a little time at the pool or beach before camp to boost your camper’s comfort level.

  • Pack well: A well-fitting swimsuit, goggles (if they use them), and a towel they like will help make time in the water all the more fun!

Water time is one of the best parts of summer and at Camp Casco, we make sure it’s safe and a whole lot of fun!
