Meet the team: Abra “Disco” Landau

Abra joined Camp Casco in May 2023 after leaving the B2B marketing world. With years of marketing and volunteer experience, she is excited to be part of the Camp Casco family!

I heard about Camp Casco in 2015 from my friend Victoria, aka Scout. She invited me to a Paint ‘n Sip party to benefit a new pediatric cancer camp her friend was starting on the East Coast. Erin also sold homemade Christmas ornaments at that event; I still have mine!

Fast forward several years, and I was laid off from my corporate job and unsure what to do next. I knew I wanted to return to the nonprofit world but didn’t know where to start. It turns out that Camp Casco was looking for a marketing coordinator! Victoria connected Erin and me, and here we are!

While my professional background is in corporate marketing, I volunteered for more than ten years with the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life. I became involved with Relay for Life after my mom passed from Breast Cancer when I was in high school. It gave me a purpose and an outlet to deal with the loss. After I graduated from college, I worked as a recruiter for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in San Diego. In August 2010, I moved to Boston for graduate school and got my Master’s in Public Relations, with an emphasis on nonprofit PR.

My first professional experience in college was working in the Public Affairs and Communications office for a children’s hospital in the Bay Area. I got to see first-hand the impact healthcare had on sick kids. I was inspired by the work of the doctors, social workers, and child-life specialists at my hospital. I knew that working in healthcare, specifically with children, was my dream career goal.

Finding Camp Casco was a serendipitous experience. Not only did this opportunity come at the perfect time, but working for a nonprofit based in Boston is a dream! While I live in Southern California, I went to grad school at Boston University (Go Terriers!), and I visit Boston at least once a year. I love that now I can visit my friends and Camp Casco on my trips back east.

I haven’t had the chance to see camp sessions in person, but when I started last May, one of my first tasks was creating the daily recap reels for all the programs. I’ll never forget working on a reel for Day Camp and being SO happy I finally found a job I love. It was beautiful to get the daily updates from the team and see the kids having the best time at camp.

When I’m not working on camp stuff, I’m usually at home hanging with my cat and watching true crime shows. My boyfriend and I love going on weekend adventures, usually to the desert or exploring California mountain towns. I also love trivia (Wikipedia is my most-visited website), and I hope to be on Jeopardy someday!
